Lower Back Pain Causes
Nearly everyone, at some point in their lives, will experience lower back pain. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on low back pain related issues and is commonly cited as a reason for missing work. So if you are experiencing lower back pain, you are not alone.
There are many lower back pain causes. The most common is muscle strain. This is when a muscle or ligament in the lower back is strained by poor movement. Lifting a heavy object, twisting too fast, or any sudden movement can cause muscles or ligaments in the lower back to stretch too far and develop microscopic tears. The pain from a lower back muscle strain can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain. Lower back strains usually heal on their own with the help of hot and cold packs, which you can find at any Relax The Back location in the Houston area, rest, anti-inflammatory medication, and gradual stretching and exercises targeting your lower back area. We recommend using the McKenzie Method, which focuses on the extension and decompression of your spine, when you’re recovering from a lower back injury. Learn more about the McKenzie Method and how to get back to a pain-free life by speaking to one of our specially-trained back care product consultants.
Other lower back pain causes include:
- Herniated Disc: This is where the cartilage, which acts as a shock absorber for the vertebrae, ruptures or is damaged.
- Vertebral Fractures caused by osteoporosis.
- Spinal Stenosis: This is a degenerative condition where the nerve-canal in the spine narrows putting pressure on the spinal nerve causing pain.
- Arthritis: This is a swelling or loss of cartilage in the joints. It is common in the vertebrae of the lower back causing lower back pain.
- Scoliosis. An abnormal curvature of the spine causing lower back pain.
