The Missing Link in Fitness Recovery: Why Ergonomics Matters as Much as Exercise
When most people think about recovery from exercise, the conversation often turns to nutrition, hydration, sleep, mobility work, and some specific recovery tools. All very important! However, I believe there is one big component of recovery that is often missing from most people’s recovery programs: the ergonomics of how you sit, sleep, use your phone, and more. Digital posture dysfunction, or a more lay term such as “tech neck,” is a serious issue that is plaguing not only our clients, but mostly everyone, as we all spend so much time being stationary and on screens (which, by the way, is doing a lot of other harm, but that’s for another conversation). As a trainer, I’ve seen this play out countless times. A client will commit to two to three solid training sessions a week, become more mindful and intentional about their nutritional approach, have better sleep quality, and still feel orthopedically stuck and uncomfortable. The majority of the time, the culprit isn’t what they’re doing in the gym. It’s the hours spent slouched at a desk, looking down at their phone, or sleeping in a position that compromises their spine. Daily Postural Alignment is the Missing Link Ergonomics means designing your environment to support your body’s anatomical alignment and function. How you live your day is also part of your well-being outcomes. What is the fallout of poor postural alignment during everyday activities? Poor posture increases spinal loading, which keeps muscles in a constant state of tension. Sleep positions that twist or flatten the spine reduce your ability to relax and repair fully overnight. Chronic inflammation that slows recovery from workouts and activities of daily living, which decreases your feelings of well-being. Your constant fight with low-level (sometimes high-level) inflammation from poor body alignment drains your energy and joy from both workout and non-workout activities. You should be recovering from your workout, not your posture. A Pathway for Everyday Ergonomic Recovery As we all can attest, life is filled with daily stresses. Whether direct or indirect, many of the stresses and responsibilities of our lives can contribute to postural misalignment and, consequently, to regular physical pain. In the end, we all want to be more functional and available to enjoy our lives, so here are some simple ways to monitor and mitigate some of the stresses that can affect our postural well-being. Discussion and Awareness of Posture: Bring awareness through discussion and monitoring postural alignment throughout your day. Be aware of your phone viewing position for your neck, how you sit on your couch or work chair, and your sleep position. The first step in change is often simply raising awareness of the situation. Utilize Ergonomic Resources: Whether this is online information resources or effective postural products from a company like Relax The Back, be proactive and seek out quality information and products that will assist you in better postural alignment. When creating desirable behavioral change after awareness, having a solid treatment plan is critical to lasting well-being. Evaluate the Difference: Once you have begun to focus on better postural alignment through awareness and best practices, it is important to ask: Is it working for you? Evaluation of postural awareness is a continuous step to ensure you remain functional and available for your everyday activities. Practical Ergonomic Strategies for Better Recovery Here are some additional steps you can take to bolster better postural alignment and recovery. 1. Desk Setup: Eyes level with the top third of the screen Hips slightly above knees when seated Feet flat on the floor (or on a footrest if needed) 2. Movement Breaks: Every 30 minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders, and take a brief walk. ○ Use “micro-movements” like calf raises or gentle spinal twists. 3. Sleep Positioning: Back sleepers: pillow under knees Side sleepers: pillow between knees to keep hips aligned Avoid stomach sleeping whenever possible. Final Thoughts Recovery doesn’t start the moment you finish your workout. It starts after every activity you do, no matter how big or small. The moment you align your daily activities with your body's postural and recovery needs, you will create a lasting sense of well-being.
