What is Carpal Tunnel and Its Causes?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is typically characterized by tingling, numbness, weakness or pain felt in the fingers. Carpal tunnel is most often felt in the parts of the hand that are supplied by the median nerve; those areas are the thumb, index finger, middle finger and half of the ring finger. Carpal tunnel can occur in both hands, but is usually worse in one hand than it is in the other. Symptoms can become more pronounced while a person is using their hands or wrists. Those who suffer from carpal tunnel can also experience occasional aching in the forearm and a general stiffness in the fingers.
There are many different activities that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Prior injuries, hypothyroidism and an occupation that requires repetitive motions involving the hands or wrists put a person at a much higher risk for carpal tunnel syndrome. The work place is not the only environment in which carpal tunnel can occur. Any recreational activity that involves the use of the hands or wrist can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, especially if performed improperly over a prolonged period of time. Those who regularly use tools, perform assembly work, and those who type or work with computers are often at a higher risk for carpal tunnel. Other activities that are associated with carpal tunnel are bar code scanning, knitting, needlework or anything that causes a person to continuously twist the wrist. Increases in the intensity and duration of exercise can be linked to carpal tunnel syndrome. Commonly, racket related sports and ill-fitting equipment can also cause carpal tunnel.
