In the classic tale of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving, Rip eventually falls asleep…and he sleeps…and sleeps…in fact, his forty winks becomes twenty years!  

we all know this is just a fable.  But for many who struggle to get any real quality of sleep, it seems like a dream come true.  They imagine being able to sleep without any disturbance…without pain…waking up truly refreshed.

On July 20th, 1969, my local radio station was chock-full of classic hits by some of rock music’s legendary performers:  The Beatles hit #1 on the charts with “Get Back”…the Rolling Stones sang of the “Honky Tonk Women” in our lives…Sly & The Family Stone’s “Hot Fun In The Summertime” was our theme for the season…AND for the first time since The Beatles came to the states, Elvis Presley was suddenly relevant again!  My radio never left my side that summer…but once.

All that great music was brushed aside when my attention was focused on the events being played out on the televised stage.  Instead of singing along (poorly, so my mother says) with my transistor radio, I sat inches away from the screen of our black and white television set and became one of an estimated 500 million worldwide viewers who tuned in to see history’s “giant leap for mankind”.

Fast forward, to July of 2011…42 years after the Apollo 11 crew walked on the moon.  This time, I sat inches away from the screen of my home computer to watch the space shuttle Atlantis’ final liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center.  Thinking back on our four decades in space, I wondered about the astonishing (and not so astonishing) things we’ve developed during our exploration of the stars.

Got Tang?  Tang was actually used by some early NASA manned space flights as a powdered “breakfast drink” you mixed with water, Tang offered a healthy (?) dose of sugar blended with multi-vitamins and some awful “fruit flavoring.” In 2010, a repackaged version of Tang helped Kraft Foods pocket $1 billion in sales last year!

Then there’s Velcro.  Created in the 1950’s, Velcro got its first big break when NASA used it to secure the astronauts massive space suits.  Later, astronauts in zero-gravity conditions would secure their food trays, hand tools and laptops.

This leads me to another astonishing benefit of space research, and what is commonly known today as the “Zero-Gravity position”.  When I first interviewed at Relax The Back, another employee asked me: “Ever sat in a zero-gravity recliner?” My mind conjured up images of floating freely above the Earth…”That’s not possible”, I said more than a bit puzzled.  He then explained how the Zero-Gravity position is developed from research conducted by NASA scientists.

They would watch our astronauts while in space and how their bodies reacted to sleeping while floating in true zero-gravity.  The researchers found that they would gently bend into an S-shaped curve, with a specific 128-degree open angle at the knee and an opposite bend in the waist. The NASA team saw that keeping their rocket jockeys in this position exuded the least amount of pressure on their muscles and skeletal structure.  This is the famous Zero –Gravity position that is best replicated here on Earth by sitting in The Perfect Chair made by Human Touch.

When I sat down in the Perfect Chair Zero-Gravity recliner I could immediately feel the pressure begin to ease from my lower back.  By just the touch of a button at my fingertips, the chair begins reclining backwards…actually; the chair slowly pivots back on a single metal glide.  The stress I was carrying in my lower back began to melt away…the pressure came off my legs as the chair continued back into position.

When I reached the full Zero-Gravity position I actually felt weightless in my own skin!  I learned that having my legs elevated above my heart was good for my circulation by putting less stress on the ole ticker.  I’ve never felt so comfortable in a recliner EVER…and I can thank NASA research for it!
Looking back, it didn’t take long for me to outgrow Tang…and I refuse to wear ANYTHING held together by Velcro...but do not get between me and my Perfect Chair!
