Fibromyalgia is a painful form of soft tissue or muscular rheumatism. It affects the ligaments and tendons, often developing without a well-defined precursor. It also can result from rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus, or ankylosing spondylitis.
Most fibromyalgia sufferers experience pain in the joints and muscles, but also experience overall achy or painful sensations throughout the entire body. Well-defined tender points can also result, as illustrated by the graphic to the right.
It's best to focus on improving sleep, give aching muscles a chance to rest and rejuvenate. Some people with fibromyalgia find relief with moist heat, other with cold therapy to reduce inflammation. Core strengthening may also be useful. Always check with your physician before beginning an exercise or strengthening program.
